Keep the root run evenly moist: the combination of humus-rich material and good drainage is important because the plant does not suit prolonged waterlogging yet prefers steady moisture. In UK gardens it works well in woodland gardens and shaded borders where it can be planted alongside other shade-tolerant perennials and bulbs. Position it where spring light reaches before upper canopies fill, so its April–June flowers are noticeable. Expect a spring appearance rather than summer interest, and plan companion planting accordingly to show the plant when it is in flower.
