Clematis stans is a member of the large Clematis genus within the Ranunculaceae. As with many clematis, the foliage uses twisting leafstalks to anchor the plant to nearby structures and the stems develop woody character only after a few seasons. That climbing habit is the defining feature to plan for when siting the plant. Give Clematis stans a permanent support such as a trellis, pergola or wirework and allow room for the stems to ascend. Young growth can be fragile while it establishes, so tie in new shoots gently and avoid heavy pruning that would remove the main canes prematurely. Water to establish and protect the root area from harsh drying or surface disturbance while the stems thicken. Where space permits, train it up a wall, across an arch or through mixed borders where other plants can mask the base. The flowering period extends from May to September, providing a stretched season of interest when trained over a structure or through shrubs that do not outcompete its climbing habit.
