It is in the Clematis genus and the Ranunculaceae (buttercup) family. It grows in the southeastern United States including parts of Florida and Alabama. It is native to North America, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and other regions. In the garden it prefers full sun and most soil types. In UK gardens it is fully hardy throughout the UK (RHS H7). Suggested uses include climbers, walls, fences, obelisks, pergolas, trees, containers and mixed borders. It tolerates soil of any pH, moist but well-drained conditions and north-facing, south-facing, east-facing and west-facing aspects. Plant in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil, with the roots and base of the plant kept cool and shaded by other planting or a layer of pebbles. Grow in full sun or partial shade.
