Clematis × jouiniana is a hybrid clematis in the Ranunculaceae family, noted for its extended flowering from May to September. As with other clematis, it produces woody climbing stems that remain relatively fragile until they mature. Leaves are opposite and often divided, with leafstalks that twist to catch and hold on to supports. Give it a trellis, pergola or fence so the leafstalks can secure the plant as it climbs.

Clematis is a genus of about 380 species within the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. Their garden hybrids and cultivars have been popular among gardeners, beginning with Clematis 'Jackmanii', a garden staple since 1862. More cultivars are being produced constantly, mainly of Chinese and Japanese origin.

Clematis × jouiniana belongs to the genus Clematis within the buttercup family Ranunculaceae and sits among the many garden hybrids that have been popular since the 19th century; garden selections of Clematis have a long horticultural history, with many modern cultivars traced to Chinese and Japanese breeding. The plant climbs by means of its leafstalks rather than tendrils, so provide a framework it can twine around and you will see stems extend upwards over several seasons. Stems are woody but fragile while young, so avoid heavy pruning or rough handling in the first few years as the structural framework develops. Leaves are opposite and often divided, which helps the plant grip supports as it grows. Use Clematis × jouiniana where a climbing spring–summer display is wanted: trained up a fence or rambling over an arch, it can add vertical interest and seasonal flowers. It flowers from May to September, offering a prolonged sequence of blooms through late spring and across the summer into early autumn.
