Clematis hirsutissima is a species of flowering plant in the buttercup family known by the common name hairy clematis or vase flower. It is a perennial herb that is native to much of the western United States, from Washington to Nebraska. It is a small, erect plant which, unlike other Clematis, does not generally produce vines. It is quite variable in appearance, especially across varieties. Grow it in full sun and most soil types. In UK gardens it is fully hardy throughout the UK (RHS H7). It works well for climbers, walls, fences, obelisks, pergolas, trees, containers and mixed borders. It tolerates soil of any pH, moist but well-drained conditions and north-facing, south-facing, east-facing and west-facing aspects. Plant in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil, with the roots and base of the plant kept cool and shaded by other planting or a layer of pebbles. Grow in full sun or partial shade.
