About the genus

Bulbinella is a genus of plants in the family Asphodelaceae, subfamily Asphodeloideae, first described as a genus in 1843. Many species are endemic to Cape Province in western South Africa, confined to the winter rainfall area. Other species are endemic to New Zealand, where they are most common in the central Otago region which enjoys a similar climate to the Cape Region of South Africa.

Bulbinella modesta is a perennial member of the Asphodelaceae native to New Zealand. It suits sites that remain reliably moist and will take either full sun or partial shade. In the UK it produces its flowers from May to July. Choose a position with loam or sandy soil and aim to keep the rootzone damp rather than dry. Improve free-draining loam by incorporating some organic matter to help retain even moisture; in sandy soils a similar amendment will slow rapid drying. Plant at the same depth as the pot or rootball and water well at planting to reduce transplant shock. Use Bulbinella modesta where soil conditions tend to stay damp: moist borders, the margins of ponds or streams, or in planted rain-garden areas. It suits mixed plantings where seasonal flowering from May to July is required; avoid sites that dry out completely in summer. Keeping the soil consistently moist through the flowering period supports the best display of blooms.
