Biarum carduchorum is most readily separated from B . angustatum by the upward-directed staminodes and the considerably wider leaves. B . carduchorum is found further inland than B. angustatum . Tuber dorsoventrally compressed-discoid, 4–7 cm × 1.5–2.5 cm, sparsely offsetting. Staminate flowers in a zone 15–25 × 2–3.5 mm, anthers cream ± stained deep purple. Pistillate flowers in a hemispherical cluster c. 7 × 7 mm; ovaries squatly bottle-shaped, 1.5–2 × 0.75 mm, pale cream, style c. 0.33 mm long, purple, stigma subcapitate, c. 0.25 mm in diam, purple. Grow it in full sun and loam soil. In UK gardens it is hardy in most of the UK (RHS H5). It works well for rock gardens, alpine beds and containers. It tolerates neutral soils, well-drained conditions and south-facing aspects. Plant at appropriate depth in well-drained soil.
