Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is a species of flowering tree in the mulberry and jackfruit family (Moraceae). Its name is derived from the texture of the moderately ripe fruit when cooked, similar to freshly baked bread and having a potato-like flavor. Breadfruit was spread into Oceania via the Austronesian expansion and is believed to have been selectively bred in Polynesia from the breadnut (Artocarpus camansi). Today it is widely grown in tropical regions throughout South and Southeast Asia, islands in the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, lowland Central America, northern South America and Africa. It is native to Australia, Caribbean, Caroline Is. and Marianas. In the garden it prefers full sun and loam soil. In UK gardens it needs subtropical warmth and glass protection in the UK (RHS H1b). Suggested uses include conservatories, greenhouses and indoor spaces. It tolerates neutral soils, moist conditions and south-facing aspects. Plant in well-drained soil in a suitable position. Water during establishment.
