About the genus

Alstroemeria, commonly called the Peruvian lily or lily of the Incas, is a genus of flowering plants in the family Alstroemeriaceae. They are all native to South America, although some have become naturalized in the United States, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Madeira and the Canary Islands. Almost all of the species are restricted to one of two distinct centers of diversity: one in central Chile and southern Argentina, the other in eastern Brazil.

In the garden

Alstroemeria Princess Camilla ('Stapricamil') (Princess Series) is a garden cultivar within the Alstroemeria group and belongs to the family Alstroemeriaceae. Its reliable display falls within the UK-season window of June to September, which makes it useful for late spring and summer interest. Nursery labels and the breeder series name will give the most reliable clues to form and flower habit for this specific selection. When buying, inspect the crown or container for healthy growth and sound roots and ask the supplier for recommended site conditions and winter protection where needed. Planting technique that suits a wide range of tender and half-hardy perennials — firming the rootball into a well-prepared spot, avoiding waterlogged pockets and applying a seasonal mulch — will help new specimens establish. Stems that are intended for cutting should be harvested according to the supplier's guidance to maximise vase life. In garden use, place specimens so their flowering run will be visible during June to September and label plants clearly if you grow several Alstroemeria selections. For ongoing decisions about site, winter care and division, follow the cultivar-specific advice from the nursery or breeder; expect the main bloom across June to September.
