Aloe boylei — Clump forming

Overview

Aloe boylei is a clump forming cactus succulent in the genus Aloe, part of the Asphodelaceae family, with evergreen foliage. Aloe boylei grows best in full sun, and tolerates loam soils and any pH. Its UK hardiness is rated H1C. Suggested uses include houseplants and sub-tropical.

About

Stem short, up to 0.2 m long, simple or with offshoots from ground level to form dense groups, erect, dried leaves not persistent. It is further characterised by the unbranched inflorescences (0.4 - 0.6 m high) that have dense, capitate, subcorymbose or slightly conical racemes (10 - 12 cm long) with large (30 - 40 mm long), salmon-pink, tubular flowers. This species is widely distributed in eastern southern Africa, occurring in the Eastern Cape, western KwaZulu-Natal, eastern Free State, Mpumalanga and Limpopo in South Africa, as well as eastern Lesotho and western Eswatini (Fig. 8). Grow it in full sun and loam soil. In UK gardens it needs a warm, frost-free position in the UK (RHS H1c). It works well for houseplants and sub-tropical. It tolerates soil of any pH, well-drained conditions and south-facing and west-facing aspects. Plant in well-drained soil in sun or partial shade.
