Always favouring the gentle intervention over the heavy stamp of design, Jo Thompson has a reputation for creating romantic spaces in the UK and as far afield as Belgium and Brazil. Her latest book, The New Romantic Garden: Classic Inspiration, Modern Mood (Rizzoli), explores how gardens can each be given a personality and atmosphere of their own. The practice works in London, Sussex and Kent, with a sensibility that prioritises drawing out the existing personality of each garden rather than imposing a new one — romantic design treated as the cultivation of atmosphere and feeling rather than nostalgia.
