This large, spreading, deciduous shrub with dark green, palmate leaves comprised of five or seven oval, pointed, aromatic leaflets. Branched sprays of small, purple (occasionally white or dark blue), aromatic flowers appear on the ends of the branches in early to mid-autumn.
