A robust, upright, herbaceous perennial to about 80cm tall from central and eastern Europe with lance-shaped, sharply toothed, mid-green leaves and dense, erect racemes of blue-violet, four-petalled flowers from early to late summer. An ornamental species for a sunny, well-drained border or naturalised planting.
