A rhizomatous, deciduous perennial from Japan to about 1m tall, with broadly elliptic, pleated, bright green leaves and branched panicles of small, star-shaped, white or greenish-white flowers in summer. An ornamental but rarely cultivated species for moist, shaded, woodland conditions.
