The evergreen cowberry or lingonberry, forming a low, mat-forming sub-shrub to 30cm tall, with small, glossy, dark green, leathery leaves, short clusters of small, bell-shaped, white or pale pink flowers in summer, and tart, bright red, edible berries in autumn. An excellent ground-cover for moist, acidic, shaded or partly shaded conditions in a rock or woodland garden.
