A large shrub or small tree to about 8m tall from the dry, rocky scrub of southern South America, with small, broadly ovate to rounded, leathery, mid-green leaves and tiny, inconspicuous flowers followed by small, round, dark fruits eaten by wildlife. A rarely cultivated specialist for a sheltered, mild garden or large cool glasshouse.
