About
Schisandra rubriflora, the Chinese magnolia vine, is a climbing, deciduous shrub twining to 8 m with lanceolate, smooth, rather leathery, mid-green leaves, sometimes with reddish new shoots. Cup-shaped, deep-crimson flowers 3 cm across on pendulous red stalks in June are followed by closely-set, pea-sized, bright-red berries on dangling spikes to 12.5 cm. A dramatic and ornamental climber for a sheltered, moist, semi-shaded garden.
About the genus
Schisandra are deciduous or evergreen, monoecious or dioecious, twining shrubs with alternate leaves and solitary or clustered flowers borne in the leaf axils in spring or summer.
