A deciduous tree to about 20m tall from China with dark grey, finely fissured bark, ovate to elliptic, finely serrate, dark green leaves turning yellow in autumn, and small, pendulous male and female catkins in spring. A handsome and ornamental birch for a woodland garden or as a specimen in a larger garden.
