About

Rhododendron saxifragoides is a slow-growing, cushion-forming tender vireya shrub to 15 cm with small, narrow, glossy dark-green leaves. Tubular to trumpet-shaped, red or pink flowers are produced singly or in pairs on short stems. Though challenging to grow, this species has contributed to many successful hybrid cultivars. A specialist plant for a heated greenhouse.

About the genus

Rhododendron, one of the largest and most diverse shrub genera, includes evergreen and deciduous species and hybrids ranging from dwarf alpines to large trees, all preferring moist, well-drained, acidic soil in sheltered positions with dappled shade or full sun.

Care notes

CultivationGrow under glass, in a greenhouse or conservatory in an ericaceous (lime-free) potting mix that holds moisture well. Position in bright, filtered light, keeping temperatures as consistent as possible, and always above 8°C and below 25°C. Keep moist; in its natural environment this plant grows in boggy conditions. Maintain high levels of humidity but ensure air circulation to minimise fungal problems. See rhododendron cultivation for more detailed advice
