About
Rhododendron praevernum is a slow-growing evergreen shrub to about 1.5 m in 10 years with a compact habit and elliptic, dark-green leaves to 18 cm. Early-flowering, it produces clusters of up to 15 bell-shaped, white or pale-pink flowers with a dark-red or purple blotch in the throat in late winter to early spring. One of the most reliable early-flowering rhododendrons for a sheltered, moist, acidic garden.

Rhododendron, one of the largest and most diverse shrub genera, includes evergreen and deciduous species and hybrids ranging from dwarf alpines to large trees, all preferring moist, well-drained, acidic soil in sheltered positions with dappled shade or full sun.

Care notes
CultivationGrow in moist but well-drained, humus rich, acidic soil, in dappled or afternoon shade. Choose a site away from frost pockets and sheltered from strong winds. Mulch annually, ideally with leaf mould. See rhododendron cultivation for more detailed advice
