About
Rhododendron polylepis is an upright, evergreen shrub to around 1.8 m with long, lance-shaped, glossy dark-green leaves. In spring, trusses of funnel-shaped, dark to rosy-purple flowers create a vivid and ornamental display. A rewarding and handsome rhododendron for a sheltered, moist, acidic garden.

Rhododendron, one of the largest and most diverse shrub genera, includes evergreen and deciduous species and hybrids ranging from dwarf alpines to large trees, all preferring moist, well-drained, acidic soil in sheltered positions with dappled shade or full sun.

CultivationGrow in moist but well-drained, leafy humus-rich, acid soil in part shade with shelter from cold winds, ideal for a woodland garden; sun tolerant if soil remains reliably moist but strong sun may bleach flower colour; see rhododendron cultivation.
