A subspecies of the typical hoary rock rose from the eastern Mediterranean with small, softly hairy, grey-green leaves and pale to deep rose-pink flowers in summer. The typical subspecies of the variable C. creticus, suited to a sunny, very sharply drained rock garden in a mild climate.

Podocarpus can be evergreen shrubs or trees, with spirally arranged, but usually 2-ranked, leaves which may be linear or narrowly lanceolate; plum-shaped fleshy fruits are produced only where male and female trees grow together
