A deciduous shrub to about 2m tall from eastern Asia with stout, spiny, arching stems bearing large, broadly ovate, mid-green leaves and small, greenish-white flowers in terminal clusters followed by small, orange-red, spherical berries. A bold and architectural shrub for a sheltered, moist, woodland garden.

About the genus
