About
Phyllostachys nigra, black bamboo, is a large, elegant, evergreen bamboo with arching canes � green at first becoming blackish-brown with maturity � and narrow-lanceolate leaves to 12 cm long. One of the most striking and dramatic of all ornamental bamboos for a sheltered, sunny or partly shaded garden. Can spread vigorously via running rhizomes.

Care notes
CultivationGrow in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. Protect from cold drying winds. In a container grow in a peat-free, loam-based compost and feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser on a monthly basis during the growing season.
