A compact, cushion-forming, evergreen sub-shrub from high mountain habitats in California with small, grey-green, felted, narrowly elliptic leaves in dense mats and small, terminal clusters of tiny, white to pale yellow flowers surrounded by papery, straw-coloured (nervulosum) bracts in summer. A choice alpine for a sunny, very well-drained, gritty rock garden.
