A robust, rhizomatous perennial to about 1.5m tall from eastern North America with deeply pleated, broadly elliptic, mid-green leaves and tall, pyramidal panicles of small, dark purplish-brown, star-shaped flowers in summer. A statuesque, architectural perennial for a moist, partly shaded border.
