About the genus

Maytenus comprises approximately 200 species of trees and shrubs that are native to the Americas. However, only a few species are resilient enough to thrive in most regions of the British Isles. These plants bear small flowers that can be star-shaped or tubular, appearing either individually or in groups, often leading to the development of vibrant fruits.
