About
A medium to large, ribbed, mid-season, dessert apple with dark red, greasy skin and crisp, juicy, sweet flesh which stains red when very ripe. A vigorous grower, cropping in early autumn, fruit storing to late autumn. Requires a group 3, 4 or 5 pollinator. The name is believed to have originated from an incident in late 19th century Scotland when a plougman was shot for stealing apples. His wife threw them onto the rubbish heap; one of the resulting seedlings developed into this cultivar.

Care notes
CultivationPrefers deep, fertile, moist but well-drained, neutral soil in a sunny sheltered position. Will not thrive on very acid soils, shallow chalk soils or with shade for more than half the day. May require fruit thinning to improve fruit size and quality. See apple cultivation
