About
Luffa aegyptiaca, the loofah or sponge gourd, is a vigorous, tendril-climbing vine with rough-textured, maple-shaped leaves to 25 cm. Showy, yellow flowers are followed by long, cylindrical green fruits � the source of the familiar loofah sponge. An ornamental and productive annual vine for a sunny, sheltered, frost-free garden or large greenhouse.
About the genus
Luffa are vigorous, tendril-climbing annual vines in the cucumber family (Cucurbitaceae) producing large leaves and yellow flowers followed by long, cylindrical fruits. Young fruits are edible; mature fruits yield the familiar loofah sponge. Grown in warm, sheltered, sunny gardens.

Care notes
CultivationUnder glass, plant in large pots or direct into the greenhouse border with support for the climbing tendrils; provide high humidity and shade from hot summer sun. Outdoors plant out in early summer against a sunny fence with climbing support. Luffas need a long growing season for the fruits to mature
