About
Ilex aquifolium 'Laurifolia' (m), is a large, slow-growing, upright evergreen tree to 20 m with deep-purple shoots and usually spine-free, dark-green, glossy leaves. As a male selection it does not produce berries, but its elegant, smooth-leaved form makes it a fine garden specimen and an effective pollinator for nearby female hollies.
About the genus
Ilex, the hollies, are evergreen or deciduous shrubs and trees with often spiny, leathery leaves and small, white flowers � male and female usually on separate plants. Female plants produce the familiar red, yellow or black berries in autumn and winter when pollinated by a male nearby.
