Wollemia was identified in an Australian rainforest in 1994 and is recognized as a "living fossil." It is a monotypic genus.

Wollemia nobilis is an evergreen conifer that features a narrow, upright crown in its natural environment. In spring, the fresh growth is light green, transitioning to a darker shade as the season progresses. The needles can reach lengths of up to 4 cm and are arranged in two or four ranks along the branches. This species can produce both male and female cones on the same tree; the female cones are nearly round, while the male cones resemble catkins.
