Vatricania guentheri is a sizable, slow-growing perennial cactus that can reach heights of up to 2 meters at full maturity. Its upright green stems can measure up to 10 centimeters in thickness and typically branch from the base. Each stem features as many as 27 ribs, with areoles that produce clusters of light yellow spines. Mature specimens bear funnel-shaped flowers that are either white or pale yellow, arising from a dense covering of fine red hairs on the flowering side of the plant.
