Sinopodophyllum consists of perennial plants that develop rhizomes and spread through creeping root systems. Each plant features petioles that branch into two, supporting a large, often peltate, umbrella-shaped leaf blade. The flowers, which are cup-shaped and have nine petals, emerge on short stems at the points where the leaf branches meet, leading to the formation of red or yellow fruits afterward.

Sinopodophyllum hexandrum features large, deeply lobed leaves that can have 3 to 5 segments, displaying a mix of green and purple mottling. These leaves reach their full size of approximately 25 cm across after the plant flowers in late spring and throughout the summer. The flowering stems can grow up to 30 cm tall. The flowers are either pinkish or white and are characterized by yellow stamens. In late summer, the plant produces scarlet, egg-shaped berries that hang from short, drooping stalks.
