This genus comprises eight species of shrubs and small trees that can be either evergreen or deciduous. They thrive in warm, arid regions, including parts of Eurasia, North Africa, Eastern Spain, Japan, and Taiwan. The leaves, which may be smooth or serrated, exhibit a glossy dark green appearance. During the summer, star-shaped yellow flowers bloom along the stems, eventually giving way to round, winged fruits.

From late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of tiny yellow flowers in the leaf axils, which are succeeded by disc-shaped green seed pods.
