Kedrostis africana is a succulent species characterized by a substantial swollen rootstock, or caudex, that can reach up to 50 cm in diameter. Each spring, it produces a slender climbing vine that utilizes tendrils for support. The vine features leaves that are distinctly lobed.

Kedrostis comprises approximately 35 species of vining or trailing plants found primarily in tropical regions of Africa and Asia. These plants are characterized by a swollen, tuberous base, palmately divided foliage, and flowers that can be green, yellow, white, or cream in color.
