Idesia polycarpa is a deciduous tree characterized by its open branching structure and broad, heart-shaped leaves that are glossy green with slight serrations. The leaves are borne on reddish stems, which may have a reddish hue when they are young. In midsummer, mature trees produce elongated clusters of small yellow-green flowers that emit a pleasant fragrance. When pollinated, female trees will develop hanging clusters of round red berries, which may remain on the branches into the winter months.
