Franklinia

Franklinia alatamaha is a unique member of its own genus, being the sole species within it. This deciduous plant can grow as a small tree or a large shrub, typically reaching heights of 3 to 4.5 meters. Its leaves are simple, oblong, and dark green with a glossy finish, measuring up to 18 centimeters in length, and they transition to a vivid crimson in the fall. The flowers are notable for their size, reaching up to 6 centimeters in diameter. They are cup-shaped, white in color, and feature a prominent cluster of yellow stamens, appearing in autumn. These blooms are fragrant and often coincide with the change in leaf color, but they typically emerge only after enduring a long, hot summer.
