Fitzroya is a genus that includes large tree species, with Fitzroya cupressoides recognized as the tallest tree species in South America. These trees can reach heights of 15 meters and have trunk diameters that can measure up to 5 meters.

Fitzroya cupressoides is a sizable conifer characterized by its conical shape and distinctive red-brown, peeling bark. In its native environment, it can exceed heights of 25 meters, although it typically grows more slowly. The leaves are scale-like, measuring up to 6 mm in length, and are arranged in clusters of three, often displaying white bands. The tree's large, drooping branches support small, rounded cones that reach about 8 mm in diameter and are composed of nine scales, ripening from green to brown.
