Elettaria cardamomum is a robust evergreen perennial characterized by its substantial rhizomes, which give rise to upright stems adorned with elongated, narrow leaves that are dark green in hue. During the summer months, these stems extend from the base and showcase white flowers reminiscent of orchids, often featuring markings in shades of purple, yellow, or pink. Following the flowering period, the plant produces small, fragrant pods that are pale green in color, known as cardamom.

Elettaria consists of evergreen, rhizomatous perennials characterized by upright, reed-like stems that support two rows of linear to lanceolate leaves. Distinct horizontal flowering shoots emerge, producing three-petaled flowers that give way to spherical or ellipsoid seed capsules.
