Carrierea calycina is a sizable, vertically growing tree characterized by its wide, oval leaves that can reach lengths of up to 20 cm, all supported by elongated, reddish stems. During the middle of summer, it bears small clusters of greenish-white blossoms, which are succeeded by notable, claw-like seed capsules in a greyish-brown hue. These capsules develop on female or bisexual specimens of the tree.
