Gaultheria shallon, shallon, is a vigorous, spreading, evergreen shrub to around 1.2 m that spreads by underground stems. Small, pendant, bell-shaped, pale-pink and white flowers appear in early summer, followed by hairy, dark-purple fruits ripening in late summer. The heart-shaped to oval leaves are borne on bristly, reddish young stems. An ornamental and reliable ground-cover for a moist, partly shaded position.
