About

Garrya fremontii, the feverbush, is a dense, branching, evergreen shrub to around 4 m with oval, glossy, smooth-margined leaves to 10 cm long. Yellow to pinkish flowers are borne in hanging catkins in spring, and on female plants may be followed by rounded fruits that ripen from green to deep purple. An ornamental and robust evergreen shrub for a sunny, sheltered position.

About the genus

Garrya are vigorous, evergreen, dioecious shrubs with simple, leathery leaves and small, greenish flowers in pendent, catkin-like racemes in late winter and early spring. Male plants produce the showiest catkins; female plants bear long chains of purple-brown fruits after pollination. Excellent for sheltered walls.
