About
Euonymus alatus, the winged spindle, is a spreading, deciduous shrub to around 2.5 m with branchlets bearing conspicuous, corky, wing-like ridges. Small, greenish flowers in spring are followed by purplish-red fruits splitting open to reveal orange seeds. The oval leaves turn a brilliant rosy-crimson in autumn one of the most reliable and striking of all autumn-colouring shrubs.
About the genus
Euonymus, the spindle trees, are deciduous or evergreen shrubs and small trees with simple leaves, small flowers, and ornamental capsular fruits that split to reveal brightly coloured seeds. Several species offer exceptional autumn colour.
