About

Eucommia ulmoides, the gutta-percha tree, is a strong-growing, broad-crowned deciduous tree to 15 m or more, with leathery, shining, oval, toothed leaves to 15 cm that produce an elastic thread of natural rubber when gently torn in half. Inconspicuous, greenish-brown flowers appear in spring; female plants may follow with flattened, elliptic, winged fruits to 3.5 cm. The bark is widely used medicinally in China. A distinctive and unusual deciduous tree for a large, sheltered garden.
