A clump-forming, evergreen or sometimes semi-evergreen perennial about 45cm tall and wide, with prickly green and white mottled basal foliage, and prickly bracts surrounding a cone-like flowerhead, metallic-blue in colour on opening in midsummer, then maturing to deep blue before fading in late summer.
