Epigaea repens, the mayflower or trailing arbutus, is a low-growing, creeping evergreen sub-shrub with leathery, oval, dark-green leaves and clusters of sweetly fragrant, pink or white, tubular flowers from late winter to spring. The state flower of Massachusetts and the provincial flower of Nova Scotia, and one of the most cherished of early spring wildflowers in eastern North America. A choice shrub for an acidic, peaty, shaded garden.
