About

Disanthus cercidifolius, the long-stiped disanthus, is a large, wide-spreading deciduous shrub with broadly heart-shaped leaves that turn deep crimson, purple and orange in autumn among the finest of all shrubs for autumn colour. In autumn, pairs of small, starry, 5-petalled, deep-maroon flowers open simultaneously with the foliage colour, adding a subtle, unusual ornamental note. A superb specimen for a sheltered, moist, acid soil position.

About the genus

Disanthus is a monotypic genus of large, deciduous shrubs in the witch-hazel family (Hamamelidaceae), prized above almost all other shrubs for its brilliant, multi-toned autumn colour of red, purple and orange, accompanied by small, paired, maroon flowers in autumn.
