About
Dianthus erinaceus, the hedgehog dianthus, is a low-growing, evergreen perennial forming a dense mound of sharp-pointed, short, silvery-green leaves the spiny texture giving rise to the evocative common name. Slow-growing, long-lived and drought-tolerant once established, it produces small, single pink flowers in summer. An excellent and characterful alpine for a sunny, well-drained rock garden.
About the genus
Dianthus, the pinks and carnations, are annuals, evergreen perennials and subshrubs with narrow, often grey or blue-green leaves and showy, frequently fragrant flowers with fringed or toothed petals in white, pink, red or purple. Among the most beloved of all cottage-garden plants.
