Cynosurus cristatus, crested dog's tail, is a dense, tufted, evergreen native grass forming clumps of flat, narrow, fresh-green leaves and slender, wiry stems to 75 cm bearing dense, one-sided, comb-like spikes of purple-green flower spikelets in early summer. A characteristic grass of chalk downland and traditional meadows, valuable for meadow or wildflower lawn mixtures.
