Cymbidium ensifolium is a terrestrial or lithophytic cymbidium from Asia producing narrow, grass-like leaves and slender spikes of fragrant, star-shaped flowers in greenish-yellow or buff with purple-striped lips. Long cultivated in China for its fragrance and elegant form.

Cymbidium, the boat orchids, are epiphytic, lithophytic and terrestrial orchids producing prominent pseudobulbs, strap-shaped leaves and arching, many-flowered spikes of long-lasting blooms in a wide range of colours including white, yellow, green, pink, red and brown. Among the most popular and widely grown of all orchid genera.

Care notes
CultivationGrow in bark-based orchid compost. Cool to intermediate (7-24�C). Bright light but not direct midday sun. Summer outdoors in shade.
PruningRemove spent flower spikes at the base. Repot every 2-3 years in spring.
PropagationDivide large clumps in spring, each division with 3+ pseudobulbs. Keep slightly dry until rooted.
Pest resistanceRed spider mite, scale, mealybugs, and aphids.
Disease resistanceVirus diseases (mosaic, ringspot) � discard affected plants. Black rot in cold, wet conditions.
